E-Track vs NYSCEF: What Is E-Track and How Is It Different?

Attorneys often confuse E-Track, NYSCEF, and EDDS. Here’s the E-Track login, what E-Track is, how it differs from NYSCEF e-filing, and which New York court system to use for what.

What is E-Track?

E-Track is a free service within New York’s eCourts system that lets attorneys and members of the public track cases and receive automatic email notifications when there is new activity on a case — a new appearance, a motion, or a decision. It is a monitoring and alert tool: you cannot file documents through E-Track. It is available at iapps.courts.state.ny.us/etrack ↗.

E-Track is not the same as EDDS. The Electronic Document Delivery System (EDDS) is a separate tool for electronically delivering documents to a court where full NYSCEF e-filing is not available. E-Track only tracks cases and sends alerts. NYSCEF is the system you use to file.

How to log in to E-Track

  1. Go to the official E-Track portal using the E-Track Login button above.
  2. Enter your E-Track credentials. E-Track uses a separate login from NYSCEF — your NYSCEF password will not work here. A free E-Track account is all you need to track cases and receive email notifications.
  3. Add the cases you want to follow and choose email alerts for new activity.

Which system do I use for criminal cases in New York?
E-filing in criminal matters is limited and handled under specific court procedures rather than general NYSCEF civil e-filing, so follow the rules of the particular court. To monitor a criminal case, you can often track it and receive alerts through eCourts / E-Track. When your matter is a civil case, use the Eligibility Checker to confirm whether NYSCEF e-filing is mandatory, voluntary, or unavailable.
